Visit Nazareth

Practical answers for pilgrims and travellers: getting there, what to wear, when to come and what to expect.

Getting there

How to reach Nazareth

Nazareth sits in the hills of Lower Galilee in northern Israel, an easy trip from the coast.

  • From Haifa

    about 36 km by road

The simplest route: about 40 minutes by car or taxi, or about an hour by bus.

  • From Tel Aviv

    about 110 km by road

About two hours by car. Buses and trains run to the north; by public transport the usual way is to travel to Haifa or Afula and change to a bus for Nazareth.

  • From Ben Gurion Airport

    about 120 km by road

About two hours by car or taxi. By public transport, take the train to Haifa or Tel Aviv and continue by bus; a pre-booked shuttle or a rental car is the easiest.

  • Once you are in Nazareth

The holy sites are all within about 15 minutes' walk of each other, so you can park once and explore on foot. Parking in the centre is limited, so arrive early or use a car park at the edge of the old town.

Good to know

Before you come

  • Dress code

Churches ask visitors to cover shoulders and knees, women and men alike. A light scarf or shawl in your bag solves it. Wear comfortable shoes: the old lanes are steep and uneven.

  • Etiquette

Speak softly in the churches and put your phone on silent. Remove hats inside. Photography is usually allowed, but not during services; ask before photographing people.

  • Best seasons

Spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November) are mild and the most pleasant for walking. Summer is hot and dry; winter is cool and rainy. Easter, Christmas and the Feast of the Annunciation on 25 March are the busiest and most moving times.

  • Safety

Nazareth is generally welcoming and calm, but conditions in the region can change. Check your government's travel advice before you go, follow local news, and keep valuables close in crowds.

  • Money

The currency is the Israeli new shekel (ILS, ₪). Cards are widely accepted and there are ATMs in the centre; carry some cash for market stalls and small cafés. Polite bargaining is part of shopping in the market.

  • Language

People speak Arabic and Hebrew, and in the places pilgrims visit you will find English and often other languages too. A few words of Arabic are always warmly received.
